Project Detail

Project Length: 10 Weeks

Project Advisor: Todd Zaki Warfel

Project Type: Individual Project

PROBLEM

Finding the right fitting shoe is a real challenge and an inevitable chore for parents.

IT’S JUST SHOES. WHY IS IT SO HARD ?

  • Lack of knowledge (Whatever grandparents say)
  • Time (You don’t say ;p)
  • Well, they just forget (Sorry, kids..)
  • Different style, different brand, different fit (it’s just impossible..)

TARGET AUDIENCE

  • Parents with children under the age of 12
  • Parents who use a smartphone/a tablet as part of their daily life
  • Parents who lead a busy life.. *cough* I meant every parent

GOAL

Parents can scan children’s feet from their smartphone with AR technology. The shoe-fitting app provides the foot measurement (length + width) which they can use to purchase affiliated brands online or wherever they get their shoes.

With in-app shopping, they can easily select the brand and style they want, the size will automatically be converted and ready to purchase with simple clicks. And they will get a notification when it is time to re-measure, depending on the age of their child.

APPROACH

Research + Mapping

  • Topic Exploration
  • Affinity Diagram
  • Ecosystem
  • Concept Model
  • UserFlow + WireFlow + Screen Flow

PAPER PROTOTYPE

USABILITY TESTING

GOAL

  • Understand parents’ behavior regarding acquiring shoes for their child.
  • Understand parents’ needs for self-fitting and what could possibly be the obstacles in the process.
  • Evaluate through a prototype how the idea matches with users’ expectation
  • Assess how feasible and practical the application is.

PARTICIPANT

P1: Interior Designer, 37, 1 child

P2: VP Co-creation Strategy, 33, 4 children

P3: Business Owner,29, 2 children

P4: Real Estate Agent, 33, 2 children

USER FEEDBACK

INSIGHT 1 DASHBOARD/HOME

  • All participants were confused between age or the shoe size label
  • 3 out of 4 thought the dashboard was irrelevant, not useful, too complicated for an open screen
  • 3 out of 4 did not understand what the chart indicates
  • The main navigation bar’s meaning was unclear

INSIGHT 2 PROFILE

  • 2 out of 4 thought the size history was irrelevant.

I don’t need to know when I didn’t take her sizes  – Adam

  • 2 out of 4 suggested having a purchase history on this screen

  • A participant suggested having the next measurement due reminder

  • A participant expected to see more details about favorite shoes

INSIGHT 3 ADD MEMBER

A participant mentioned that the shoe size varies by brand so she feels drawn to do “measure now” first to get a general idea of how the app measures her child’s feet compared to brands she has tried before.

INSIGHT 5 TRY-ON SHOES

  • Most participants paused/seemed surprised when the prototype directed them to the Stride Rite website. All thought it was unexpected, but convenient to have the shoe ready to purchase in the shopping cart.
  • A participant mentioned her tendency to drag and drop when trying on shoes
  • A participant expected that the app would show the shoes on sale in the child’s size

What I learned + What I would do next

  • AR Prototype was definitely a challenge in this project. With limited resources and the inability to simulate real AR, users need to use lots of imagination to understand the concept. The paper prototype turned out to be very useful to aid with visualization.
  • This project happened during the COVID pandemic so the user testing had to be done remotely. It would be interesting to do the test in person with the families, using mobile devices.
  • Despite the low number of participants, I was able to gather information and see issue patterns that I didn’t expect before.
  • I would define and categorize the feedback next time.
  • I would like to redo the wireframing to make a better flow.
  • I would do more user research to be able to develop features and get rid of the features that aren’t necessary.
  • I would like to design the app to be more fun and kid-friendly. I believe that if the kids enjoy using it, it will give a better experience to the whole family.
